Mabel Louise Cummings (1871 - August 27, 1960) was born in 1871 and passed away on August 27, 1960, following a brief illness at the age of 88 or 89. She graduated from the University of Chicago. During her youth, she resided in Adams, Massachusetts, living with her grandfather, the late John Ingraham.
Cummings had a distinguished career as an educator and faculty member. She taught at Wellesley College from 1921 to 1927, where she also headed the Physical Education Department. Following her tenure at Wellesley, she taught at Douglass College in New Brunswick, New Jersey, from 1927 until her retirement in 1939. After retiring, she made her permanent residence at 15 Roanoke Road in Wellesley, Massachusetts, starting in 1939.
In terms of her personal life and social connections, Cummings was part of an interconnected household in Wellesley. For many years, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Emily Greene Balch shared a house there with Agnes Perkins of Wellesley College's English department and Perkins' friend Etta Herr, and this household was eventually joined by Mabel Cummings.
Following her death on a Saturday in August 1960, funeral services were held at St. Andrew's Church. Committal and funeral services also took place with the Very Rev. Nelson W. Bryant, rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, officiating. She was laid to rest in the Sanford Stetson lot at the Maple Street Cemetery in Adams, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, leaving behind several nieces and nephews.
